The short answer

Claude Code is a coding agent that reads and writes files on your computer or in a cloud workspace. It can turn a topic into a content plan, captions, carousel outlines and Reel scripts, and save reusable steps as skills. GitHub stores and tracks those files. Posting to Instagram is a separate step that needs a professional account, a Meta app with publishing permission or a scheduling service, and a person who approves each post.

Claude Code can plan posts, draft captions and Reel scripts, and keep everything organized in GitHub. Publishing still needs Meta's API or a scheduler, plus a human approval step.

01 / The story

What can Claude Code actually do for Instagram content?

Claude Code can do the writing and file work behind a content calendar: drafting, organizing, renaming, checking and repeating steps. It does not come with an Instagram account connection. Anthropic describes it as a model working with built-in tools for file operations, search, running commands and web access. [1]

In practice that means you can ask it to read an article, propose five post ideas, draft captions in your brand voice, outline a 7-slide carousel and write a 30-second Reel script with shot notes. It saves each draft as a file you can open, edit and compare later.

Keep five roles separate, because mixing them up causes most confusion: Claude Code creates and edits files; GitHub stores and tracks those files; an API or approved integration performs an action such as publishing; a scheduler decides when the action happens; and a person approves what goes live.

02 / The story

What do you need before you start?

For drafting only, you need Claude Code with an eligible Anthropic plan or API account, a project folder and your source material. Check Anthropic's current plan page for access and cost; this guide does not quote a price.

For automatic publishing, Meta's documentation requires an Instagram professional account, a Meta app using Instagram Login or Facebook Login for Business, and publishing permissions such as instagram_business_content_publish. Media must sit on a publicly reachable server when Meta fetches it. [4]

Some accounts linked to a Facebook Page must complete Page Publishing Authorization before API publishing works. Meta also limits a professional account to 50 API-published posts in a moving 24-hour window. [4] [5] Installing Claude Code or connecting GitHub does not give you any of these permissions.

03 / The story

How to organize the project in GitHub

A simple folder structure makes drafts easy to find and review. GitHub then records every change, so you can see who edited a caption and roll back a mistake. [6]

Keep secrets out of the repository. Access tokens belong in environment variables or a secrets manager, never in a caption file or a committed config. If a token was ever committed, revoke it and create a new one.

Example folder layout / Example

assets/ # images and videos for review

How skills make the workflow repeatable

A skill is a SKILL.md file with instructions that Claude Code loads when it is relevant, or when you type its name as a command such as /instagram-caption. Project skills live in .claude/skills/ and can include supporting files like a checklist. [2]

A useful caption skill might say: read brand/voice.md, write three caption options under 150 words, put the hook in the first line, suggest a fixed number of relevant hashtags (for example, five), flag any claim that needs a source, and save the result to the draft folder. The skill improves consistency; it does not make a claim true.

05 / The story

Can Claude Code create Instagram carousels, images and Reels?

Yes, but it works differently from an AI image or video generator. Instead of making a finished picture straight from a prompt, Claude Code writes code that builds the design, renders the images or puts a video together using other software installed or connected to your project. Those rendering tools have to exist in the environment first: Claude Code can install Playwright, FFmpeg or Remotion for you with your approval, but it cannot run them until they are installed.

Carousels as PNG images: Claude Code can write HTML, CSS or SVG for branded slides, and a rendering tool such as a headless browser turns them into PNG files. One reusable template can fill many slides from structured content, so a series keeps the same look. Common sizes are 1080 × 1350 pixels for portrait carousels and 1080 × 1080 for square posts; check Instagram's current specifications before publishing.

Reels as MP4 videos: it can write code for motion graphics and video assembly with tools such as Remotion, FFmpeg or browser-based animation. The code and those rendering tools make the video; Claude Code helps create and run that workflow. It does not produce photorealistic footage or original AI-generated scenes by itself.

AI-generated images and scenes: if a post needs a photorealistic scene, an AI illustration or cinematic footage, you need a suitable image or video model, or licensed assets. Those can then be placed into the code-built carousel or video, within each tool's abilities, permissions and usage terms.

  • Template ideas: consistent logo placement and typography, a recognizable color palette, headline and supporting-text layouts, numbered slides with swipe hints, source references and article links, and a final call-to-action slide.
  • Reel ideas: animated headlines and moving text, moving charts, transitions between slides, animated summaries, captions, and Reels-style videos with music or voice-over you have the rights to use.
  • Bottom line: Claude Code's strength is creating and running the code that assembles the content; specialized image and video models supply generated visuals when you need them.

Example workflow: from article to approved Reel

This is an illustrative workflow built from the documentation, not a tested Qlauson production pipeline.

Approval checkpoints sit at steps 3 and 6. Nothing reaches the approved folder, and nothing is published, until a named person signs off.

  • 1. Pick a topic and save the source article or notes in the project.
  • 2. Ask Claude Code to run your caption skill and produce a caption, a carousel outline and a Reel script with shot list.
  • 3. Review the drafts: facts, tone, rights to any music or footage, and accessibility such as alt text and captions.
  • 4. Fill a reusable branded template and render the carousel slides or Reel with code-based tools, adding any generated or licensed visuals; check you have rights to every asset and that text is readable.
  • 5. Commit the drafts to GitHub and open a pull request so a second person can review the change.
  • 6. Approve and move the files to approved/.
  • 7. Publish through a scheduler you trust or your own Meta-approved app, then check the live post.

Connecting tools: MCP, schedulers and permissions

Claude Code can connect to outside services through the Model Context Protocol, or MCP. A connected server lets it read or act in that system. Anthropic warns that servers fetching outside content can expose you to prompt injection, so only connect servers you trust. [3] Our MCP explainer covers how hosts, clients and servers fit together.

By default, Claude Code asks before it edits files or runs shell commands, while reads inside the working folder do not need approval. Keep publishing actions behind an explicit approval rather than allowing them permanently. [7] For a broader view of agent risk, see AI agents and computer access security.

08 / The story

Common problems and how to fix them

Most failures come from permissions and media hosting, not from the writing step.

  • Publish request fails: confirm the account is professional, the app has publishing permission and any required Page Publishing Authorization is complete. [4]
  • Media not found: the image or video URL must be public at the time Meta fetches it. [4]
  • Too many posts: check the 24-hour publishing limit. [5]
  • Generic captions: improve brand/voice.md with real examples and banned phrases.
  • Wrong facts: add a rule to the skill that flags every number or claim for source checking.

09 / The story

Who should use this, and who should not?

This setup suits creators and small teams comfortable with folders, Git and a terminal who publish often and want consistent drafts. It saves the most time on repeatable formats such as turning each article into three posts.

If you post a few times a month and do not code, a regular scheduler with built-in AI writing may be simpler. Compare options in our small-business automation tools guide. Whatever you use, AI drafts are a starting point; a person stays responsible for what goes live.

Qlauson Team: evidence and practical limits

Sources reviewed October 22, 2026. This is a documentation-based guide, not a hands-on product test: Qlauson did not run the workflows described here, and example inputs and outputs are illustrative.

We did not connect a live Instagram account or test the Meta API for this article; requirements come from Meta's developer documentation.

Features, prices, plan names and availability change often. Check the linked official pages before you buy, connect accounts or rely on an output. This is educational information, not legal, security or financial advice, and not an endorsement.

Checked October 22, 2026: Cover logo: none. Anthropic's official Brandfolder newsroom (https://brandfolder.com/anthropic/newsroom) and press kit (https://www.anthropic.com/news) offer assets but state no third-party usage terms we could find, and Instagram/Meta marks were not used either, so permission is unclear and the cover stays an original illustration.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude Code post to Instagram by itself?

Not on its own. Publishing needs Meta's API with an app, login and permissions, or a scheduling service. Claude Code can help write the code or prepare files for that step.

Do I need a business or creator account?

For Meta's publishing API, yes: it works with Instagram professional accounts.

Does connecting GitHub give Instagram access?

No. GitHub only stores and tracks files. Instagram access comes from Meta's own permissions.

What is a Claude Code skill?

A SKILL.md file of reusable instructions that Claude Code loads when relevant or when you call it by name.

Can it make Reels videos?

Yes, with code. It can write scripts and captions and build MP4 videos through tools such as Remotion or FFmpeg, for example animated headlines, charts and captions. It does not create photorealistic footage on its own; that needs a video model or licensed clips, plus rights to any music.

Is there a limit on API posts?

Meta documents a limit of 50 API-published posts per professional account in a moving 24-hour period.

Should I let it publish without review?

No. Keep a human approval step for facts, rights, tone and timing before anything goes public.
